The "Cave"

Trevor first went "the cave" with his young men, and I tell you what, I didn't stop hearing about how awesome "the cave" was until he finagled me into going (It was actually quite the deal, I said I would go to "the cave" if he shaved his beard - check and check). Thus, one weekend in April, Trevor picked me up from the airport and we headed out to Stansbury Island for our trip to the cave.

What is "the cave"?
"The cave" is just as it sounds, a cave. A cave resides in the side of a mountain. The walls are rock and the ground is dirt, with very hard rocks.

Here is the entrance to "the cave." It's size is very deceiving. The cave just comes out of no where.

The top left shows the base of the cave as you enter. Once inside the cave you look up and around and it's just huge (it was hard to capture it's size with a photo).

Looking from inside "the cave" out.

Where is "the cave"?

The cave is behind us and out of the photo to the left. Like I said earlier, it's on Stansbury Island, just west of Antelope Island for those of you that are familiar with the area.

Just hike up a bunch of hills and sides of the mountains (a few of which are pictured below), never move horizontally, but only vertically, and you'll find the cave.

What do you do at "the cave"?

1. Scavenge for and cut fire wood, mainly

Full-time job for Trevor. Lots and lots of chopping, dragging, kicking, pulling.

But he loved every minute of it.

Here's a shot showing the "scavenge" piece of the deal. Trevor went and found about the only wood left in that not-so-prideland-when-Mufasa-reigned land.

2. Build and move fires

It's a good thing Trevor did go find all that wood because the second major activity was starting fires and then moving them.

Fire sites 1 and 2. (ps. building a fire in a cave - not smart, picture on the left below)

Final fire site 3.

3. Not sleep

Sleeping on the floor of a cave is not possible. This could also have been because I was about 6.5 months pregnant at the time, but I'm pretty sure Trevor would confirm, the pain caused by the floor of "the cave" is enough to cause anyone nightmares. It inflicted pain on my body that was almost unbearable. Bears are special animals for being able to sleep for months in caves.

Why should you go to "the cave"?

1. You get to see this as the sun goes down...and feel like you're the only two people in the world watching.

2. Roasting starbursts!!

3. And of course take a fun little trip with my great husband that let's him be one with nature.

wow. The Cave aside, Trevor looks Amish and Les looks Prego! You two sure rock the house.

Leslie, you are hard core for sleeping in a cave at 6.5 months pregnant. I give you serious props.

I like the contrast between the dry, arid cave area and the warm, relaxing sunset. Glad you enjoyed getting away from it all, even thought you didn't get any sleep!

Two questions; How do you get to the cave? (Is there a boat?) Can I go to the cave?

For a minute there I forgot I was on your blog and felt like I was on some sort of National Geographic site.

As Steve's personal google reader, I will have to inform him of this post.

Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't look like the safest of events for a pregnant lady to partake in :)

When Jim and I stayed with you guys, I remember Trevor's enthusiasm about "the cave". I am so glad you got to venture into the cave. It looks really cool and that sunset was fabulous.
